The church should maintain the true Lutheran teaching, which we inherited from the Fathers, the only way we can do this by being be able to train our pastors properly in the Word of God and Lutheran Doctrine, We wish to be true Evangelical by spreading the word of God in all areas, farms, villages and cities. Though our wishes are limited. Lack of transport to the rural areas as in some is absolutely no Public transport to reach the people with the materials like Bibles. Most of the people cannot read, in rural areas, these people should be helped to read and write, so that they also can study the word of God. The catechism should be properly translated into the people ‘s language to understand the word of God.
The church should be the instrument of peace not only in South Africa. It is my desire to see our church actively participating in the rest of the Continent, and becoming messengers of peace and co-operation. In this way the ULCSA sees itself being the ambassadors of AIELC on the African Continent.
ULCSA being a member of the Association, we wish that member churches could pray for us in Africa to achieve our mission work of spreading the word of God in the rural areas where most disadvantage people live and assist the church reach the lost souls in Southern Africa.
May God bless you
The Rt. Rev. Bishop Louis S. Mphahlele
United Lutheran Church in South Africa
Member of AIELC

Mission work on rural areas:
The new South African Government for the past 10years is relocating the people whose land was taken away from them. Land distribution is the mayor priority of the present government. As people are now resettling in new rural villages it is a great challenge of our church to spread the Gospel among these “new developing communities” The evangelist are doing this through tent ministry and distribution of small Bible donated by individuals. We have so far managed to establish 5 new congregations in the rural areas.
Many houses are build by the government to provide, previously disadvantages people with house. Lot of new suburbs are being developed in almost every town, Pastors are traveling to these new suburbs to spread the word of God.
Youth Ministry:
The church is engage in youth Ministry both in previously white community to let the young people of both races worship, praise and do Bible studies together: Holding conferences together to learn from each other as they have been separated for too long by apartheid Youth pastor is planning annual Programmes mostly for the urban youth. We have not yet reached the young people in the rural areas because of our limited resources.
Sunday School:
This is the most demand part of the church ministry, we are presently training the Sunday School teachers, as there are many children who can not read the mother tongues but English only mostly in urban areas. There is a lack of teachers and many children. Lack of teaching materials. We were only being able to send one teacher who is co-coordinating the Sunday school teaching in the rural areas.
Pastors Training
Our church is training Pastors through Extension: Our small college called Mosupatsela Lutheran Theological College which offer subject through distance learning: two year certificate learning programme and the student will then be sent for practicals under a pastor in a congregation. We pray that will be able to develop a proper training for our pastor, as by now we are struggling in training of pastor, Sunday School Teachers and Church administrative staff.
Aids/HIV Programmes:
Our church is busy with aids awareness campaigns both in urban and rural areas, we conduct workshop for aids counselors.
We have so far manage to open 1 home-based for people affect by aids. It is our which to do more than this, training of pastors to be aids counselors and to spread the message of abstinence.
Prison Ministry
Even though our pastors have no formal Prison ministry training we have a programme where Pastors conduct service at prisons visiting the prisoners every once a month.
Income generating Projects and Vegetable Gardening
Since mostly of the people are unemployed, we have initiated a self income generating project in which members are encouraged to plough vegetables, sell them to the members of the community., sewing and baking. Our Bishop is giving example to these people; he is selling Bible and Hymnbooks and other Christian materials as a self income-generating project.
